The Law Offices of Robert G. Schock

Oakland Serious Burn Injury Lawyer

There are three generally identified types of burn injuries that one can sustain. These include:

  • First degree burns (characterized as a superficial burn) include damage to the top layer of skin, or the epidermis, and are most commonly caused by sunburn. These burns will usually heal by themselves between 5-7 days.
  • Second degree burns (characterized as a partial thickness or dermal injury) include damage to the much thicker dermal layer of skin beneath the epidermis. These burns are usually treated with skin grafts in order to heal.
  • Third degree burns (characterized as a full thickness injury) are the most serious burn injuries one can sustain. These injuries include damage to hair follicles, sweat glands and areas where new skin cells grow, and require skin grafts to fully heal.

Second degree and third degree burns are extremely painful, and in most situations require extensive medical attention in order to heal and will usually leave scar tissue even with the aid of cosmetic surgery. In the worst case situations, these burns can permanently alter not only the victim’s life due to the inability to work and live a normal life, but their loved ones’ lives as well who may now need to care for the victim.

These burns can be obtained from many sources including defective consumer products, coworker or employee negligence at a workplace, or deliberately applied by someone out to do harm to the victim. In cases such as this, a burn injury lawyer can work with the victim to obtain legal justice by filing litigation against those responsible.
